Prime Minister of Kazakhstan Olzhas Bektenov held a constructive business meeting with Han Chunlin, the newly appointed Ambassador Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary of the People’s Republic of China to Kazakhstan. The discussions focused on expanding cooperation in trade, economy, agriculture, transport, energy, culture, and tourism. Bektenov highlighted the significance of the strong relationship between President Kassym-Jomart Tokayev of Kazakhstan and President Xi Jinping of China for economic progress, as evidenced by a 9% increase in bilateral trade, reaching $43.8 billion in 2024.
To further boost trade volumes, both governments aim to deepen collaboration and strengthen existing ties. Kazakhstan proposed increasing grain exports to China and diversifying its supply range. The meeting also underscored investment cooperation, with Beijing continuing to demonstrate reliability and commitment to long-term partnership with Kazakhstan. To date, 62 projects worth $8.7 billion, supported by Chinese investments, have created 11,000 jobs. An additional 55 projects, valued at $13.5 billion, are in progress and expected to generate 17,400 more jobs, with total investments amounting to $60.5 billion.
The talks also covered advancements in transport and logistics, with cargo shipments between the two countries rising by 13% to 29.3 million tons over 11 months in 2024. By the end of 2025, this volume could see significant growth due to several promising interstate projects under development. At the conclusion of the meeting, Bektenov and Han agreed to reinforce their partnership and pursue more active collaboration across all sectors.
