Meta, TikTok and Telegram initiate a full-scale campaign against fakes and fraud in Kazakhstan.
The Ministry of Digital Development, Innovation, and Aerospace Industry of Kazakhstan (MDIAI RK) is intensifying global partnerships to bolster cybersecurity and safeguard Kazakhstani citizens in the digital realm. Recently, Minister Zhaslan Madiyev held discussions with the US Chamber of Commerce and top US tech firms, including Meta and Apple, underscoring the ministry’s dedication to this priority. These talks covered not only broad digital security topics, such as tackling fake accounts and protecting user data, but also concrete strategies for collaborative initiatives. Special focus was given to addressing disinformation and combating cybercrime, including financial fraud and identity theft. Protecting Kazakhstan’s citizens from cyberattacks and fraudulent schemes demands a multifaceted approach. This involves not only partnerships with global tech leaders but also close coordination with national and international law enforcement agencies, alongside enhancements to the legal framework. A key measure in this regard is the mandate for internet platforms like Telegram, WhatsApp, and TikTok to establish local representative offices in Kazakhstan, enabling better oversight of illegal content and swift responses to violations. The agreement with Telegram to set up a local office marks a significant step toward ensuring accountability for content shared on its platform, facilitating the rapid identification and blocking of channels distributing extremist, terrorist, or other unlawful material. Additionally, a local presence streamlines cooperation with Kazakhstan’s law enforcement in cybercrime investigations. Collaboration with Telegram is just one element of a broader strategy. MDIAI RK is actively working with platforms like Meta to jointly combat fraudulent schemes that cause significant financial and emotional harm to Kazakhstani users. Internet fraud, a global challenge, is no exception in Kazakhstan, and success in addressing it hinges on robust international cooperation and knowledge sharing. In recent months, Meta has globally deactivated over 1.2 billion fake accounts, leveraging advanced AI technologies to detect and eliminate them. AI is pivotal in identifying sophisticated, ever-evolving fraudulent schemes. Meta also allocates substantial resources to developing and deploying new technologies to enhance user protection against fraudsters. Future collaboration with Meta and other global partners will focus on sharing data about fraudulent schemes, co-developing tools for their detection and prevention, and improving cyber literacy among the population. Strengthening cybersecurity legislation to address modern challenges and provide a robust legal foundation for prosecuting cybercriminals is another critical priority. MDIAI RK plans to deepen ties with international organizations like INTERPOL and Europol, fostering information exchange and joint investigations into global cybercrime networks. Additionally, MDIAI RK is committed to advancing the national cybersecurity framework, including upgrading communications and IT infrastructure. This will enhance protection for critical infrastructure against cyberattacks and ensure the security of state information resources. The long-term vision is to establish a secure and reliable digital environment for all Kazakhstani citizens, safeguarding their rights and freedoms online. Thus, MDIAI RK’s efforts to strengthen global cybersecurity cooperation are vital for Kazakhstan’s future development.
